Nomad Assistance

Dzud Humanitarian Response

Emergency fund for animal fodder and direct support to affected families during catastrophic winter weather conditions which have led to the death of livestock, threatening the very livelihood of nomads.

Other Natural Disasters

Emergency fund extends for assistance when floods, landslides and sandstorms strike, which cause loss of life, homes and livestock. During such times, much help for survival is needed.

Building Resilience

“The increasing frequency and intensity of natural disasters, as evidenced by the harsh winters over two consecutive years and last year’s floods, call for attention to institutions, policies, and investments to make the country more resilient to the adverse impacts of climate change.”  – World Bank report

In addition to emergency assistance, we are developing resilience projects. For instance, for nomads who have had total loss of their herds, we are researching providing starter animals so they may begin breeding new herds. This will help nomads preserve their traditional way of life. We will also research grain storage and distribution for future Dzud.

What is a Dzud?

Dzud is a slow-onset weather disaster which blocks livestock from accessing grass and water because of snow depth (white dzud), ice pack / dense-pack snow (iron or ice dzud), or extreme cold following drought where livestock were not able to adequately fatten up to survive winter (black dzud). These conditions may occur in combination with each other, along with extreme wind and blizzards. Massive die-offs of livestock occur during dzud.
